Different Types of Mezzanines for Warehouses

Know more about the pros and cons of different types of mezzanines for warehouses.

Do you need more space for storing goods?

The good news is that it’s a sign that your business is growing! And the bad news?

How do you accommodate the extra space requirement without expanding the footprint of your warehouse, or worse, shifting to an entirely new warehouse?

Maybe it is time to look upwards, in the literal sense!

What is a mezzanine?

A warehouse mezzanine is an elevated floor or platform workers install between the floor and the ceiling. It has several open, raised platforms and is a cost-effective storage solution.

Mezzanines use the vertical area by adding additional workspaces to the existing warehouse space.

Suppose your warehouse has a clear vertical height of at least 20 feet. In that case, a mezzanine is an excellent choice for additional operating space.

They can almost double a building’s available work area.

Let us take a look at the different types of mezzanines for warehouses.

1. Free-standing mezzanines

Free-standing mezzanines help utilize overhead warehouse space. These mezzanines use structural columns installed with the deck and do not depend on existing structural components like shelving or racking for stability.

Advantages:

· These are a perfect option for storage when space is limited
· Can withstand a lot of wear and weight
· Helps to increase work in a small area
· Offer the most flexibility in the event of an equipment layout change

Disadvantages:

· More heavy construction
· Takes significant ground space

2. Shelving and Rack Supported mezzanines

Rack-supported mezzanine is a structural mezzanine floor with racks and shelves. These mezzanines are lighter and a cost-effective method of providing extra space. Rack uprights support them.

Advantages:

· Connection to the columns makes the decking more stable and firmly anchored.

Disadvantages:

· In the case of an equipment layout change, you will need to change the whole system.

There are two types of Shelving/rack-supported mezzanines –

Catwalk Mezzanines

It consists of high-rise racking or shelving with decking placed only in aisles. The primary use of catwalks is as walkways for access to conveying systems, machinery, and attic space.

Advantages:

· Increases the capacity of tall shelves or racks.
· Less expensive to construct.
· Easy to include stairways and gates.

Disadvantages:

· Requires shelving to be the same on all levels.

Full Mat Mezzanines

Full mat mezzanines combine the features of free-Standing and catwalk designs and are supported by shelving or rack uprights.

Advantages:

· The second level is an open area and can be used for bulk storage.
· Can be installed over existing shelving
· Have an open second level

3. Prefabricated Mezzanines

These types of mezzanines are ready for use. They are already designed to install and fit into a workspace.

Advantages:

· Easy assembly and can be reconfigured when changes occur
· Less expensive than constructed mezzanines

4. Roll Formed Mezzanines

Roll-form mezzanine storage structures are made from lighter gauge steel. It can be used for seasonal items that will not sit on the storage platform for extended periods.

Advantages:

· Light weight makes it possible to adjust them to fit workload changes

Disadvantages:

· Not suitable for sizeable and expansive production areas

5. Structural Steel Mezzanines

These mezzanines are heavier and are made from durable high-grade duty steel. The structural framing is fabricated out of structural steel beams and columns. The use of steel provides durability, strength, and safety.

Advantages:

· Made from steel, which is durable and strong

Disadvantages:

· Cannot adjust to fit workload changes

A mezzanine is a valuable addition to the warehouse, making use of the vertical space to store goods. But you need to be clear about the purpose of this additional storage space before you install one.

· What do you plan to use it for?

· Do you need an office space or extra space to store more products?

Decide your goals, and have a clear idea of your core requirements. This will help you make an apt choice from the different types of mezzanines.
