Etihad Cargo Introduces AI Solutions to Boost Airfreight Operations

The cargo and logistics wing of Etihad Airways, Etihad Cargo, has started using innovative AI-powered solutions to optimize cargo capacity and boost airfreight operations. Etihad entered into an agreement with the Singapore-based AI solutions provider Speedcargo Technologies in 2021 to develop AI products that help maximize cargo capacity on flights.

The airways have successfully tested and launched three AI solutions: Amplifi, Cargo Eye, and Assemble. These solutions are expected to standardize cargo operations across its entire network, improve customer and partner service levels, and improve airfreight efficiency.

Each AI solution will serve a specific purpose. Amplifi will help maximize the cargo carried on each flight and minimize overbookings. It will generate Unit Load Device (ULD) plans that provide step-by-step instructions to ground handling partners to optimize cargo and satisfy safety regulations. The solution will analyze booked cargo, aircraft type, and cargo offer to detect free and usable capacity.

Cargo Eye will enable the digitization of cargo using Microsoft's IOT Edge and Speedcargo's algorithms. The scalable and modular solution will capture each cargo's volume and dimensions when it enters Etihad's ground handling stations. The real-time data will be further used for forward operations, build-up, and load planning.

The third solution, Assemble, will use the load plans generated by Amplifi for the digital planning and build-up of ULDs.

Quoting Martin Drew, Senior Vice President – Global Sales & Cargo, "Etihad Cargo, with the launch of these AI solutions, is creating an information-rich network that connects airline operations and ground handling for better planning and decision-making. Creating digital audit trails of how cargo is received and handled will benefit Etihad Cargo's customers by providing a more seamless end-to-end experience and improving the productivity and efficiency of planners and ground handling partners, with the ability to handle multiple flights simultaneously."

The AI solutions are already being used by the carrier's ground-handling partners in Singapore. Etihad Cargo has also launched a pilot program in Frankfurt, Germany, and is expected to roll out the innovative technology across its global network.
