The Shipping Industry Ventures to Go Green with Connectainer!

Industries worldwide are considering and adopting meaningful measures to mitigate climate change, and the container shipping industry is no exception. It is discouraging to know that the industry is reeling under heavy environmental and economic losses due to empty container shipment units. 

A recent report states that every year the number of empty units shipped amounts to 57 million containers, which translates to 94.5 million TEU and 114 million container Terminal Handling Charges (THC)! The numbers are equally unpleasant on the environmental facet as well. Every THC contributes to 10 kg of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, meaning the cumulative emissions run up to 140 Tons of CO2. 
 
Connectainer or connected containers is an innovative engineering marvel that aspires to alleviate the problem. A perfect blend of intent and technology, each connectainer is a modular, standard, 20' container unit that can be connected with another 20' unit, resulting in a cumulative 40'HC unit and vice versa. In this manner, optimizing each shipment and adapting it to the customer's needs is possible without waiting for empty repositions. 

The merits of this innovative technology are in plenty. Each unit can withstand a gross weight of 32.5 tonnes and qualify for the toughest CSC certification tests. The cutting-edge e-ink display technology requires no batteries but electric power for a few seconds during coupling and decoupling. The container serial numbers will always be unique and available over the e-ink screen for years together, without depending on any power supply. The improved design will save six empty containers of THC and allow two operators to accomplish the job in 1h15m (average). 

In short, switching to CONNECTAINER will help save 14 million THC worldwide, shorten the port stay, improve schedule reliability, and reduce GHG emissions at both ports and sea.
